MEN’S HOCKEY

News and Notes About the Game

KARORI I FALL BACK Coming Representative Fixtures (By Watihana.) By dropping another point, this time to Wesley, Karori I have made Huia’s task appear much easier in the senior A grade championship. During the second half of the game it looked as if Wesley were going to steal all the honours, for they were bottling round the Karori goal most of the spell. Huia had little difficulty in disposing of Wellington, and, even if Karori I were to win the remainder of their games, Huia would now have to lose twice to forgo their lead. On recent performances that appears unlikely, although Wellington jolted them in the early stages of Saturday’s game. Later, however, they had things all their own way, and looked likely to pile up a double-figure score. After sliding well down the ladder, Hutt have commenced to climb back, and are now third as the result of their win over Technical. By no moans did they have things all their own way, however, and Technical went very close to sharing the points. Playing under atrocious conditions, with a greatly weakened team, Kardri II were faced with an impossible task in their match with University at Karori Park. Karori II have now dropped back to fourth on the ladder, which place they share with University. The present position in the championship is as follows:—

Games Curtailed at Karori. Teams which travelled to Nai Nai for last Saturday's.games were rewarded for their long journey by tbe conditions under which they played. The rain was comparatively light there, and the grounds held together well. But at Karori Park conditions became so bad that, most of the games were concluded half-way through the second spell—and no one has ever called Wellington hockey a fine-weather sport. Rnin descended in torrents and the wind alone was almost enough to rob the players of their foothold. Tbe grounds, the conditon of which has been nothing to boast of this season, rapidly begun to lose all vestige of grass, and it is as well for future matches that play ceased when it. did.

Hockey and the Centennial. In reply to an invitation by thf Mayor of Wellington to send a representative to a publie meeting to further the New Zealand Centennial project, tbe Wellington Hockey Association decided on Monday night to send the chairman, Mr. C. P. McKenzie, who was instructed to submit a suggestion that a New Zealand hockey tournament should be held in 1940 as part of the celebrations.

Dominion Conference. The all-New Zealand conference of the various affiliated centres to the New Zealand Hockey Association will be held iu Wellington on August 11. The association will pay the travelling expenses of the nine members, of tbe management

committee of the N.Z.H.A., and also pay all over £3 of the travelling expenses of one delegate from each association. Membership of the conference is to be limited to the members of the N.Z.H.A. management committee, and one representative of each affiliated association, each member of the conference to have one vote. Northland Park. lu a communication to the W.H.A., toe Director of Parks and Reserves, Mr. J. G. MacKenzie, advised that the Northland Park ground had been put in good condition again for play. Challenge Shield Games. It was suggested by Mr. M. J. Cooper at Monday night’s meeting of the W.H.A., that associations holding the New Zealand Challenge Shield for more than two vears should be required to take the shield on tour, in order that challenging associations should not have to find the expense of sending teams in quest of the shield for more than two seasons, lhe proposal will be put forward at the Dominion hockey conference. Matches with Nelson. A senior A and a junior' team from Nelson will play representative Wellington teams at Wellington ou Saturday, August 1. Mr. Ivan Mackersey, secretary of the W.H.A., was appointed manager of the Wellington senior eleven. It was decided to invite Motueka to send a shield team on the same date to Wellington. In event of their doing so, all senior club games will be postponed that day. School Match. A Wellington secondary school team will play Wairarapa juniors at Masterton on August 15. The Wellington schools selectors will be Messrs. L. Lidgard and A. A. Kirk. Unia v. Karori I. The match committee of the W.H.A. was instructed to arrange the HuiaKarori I match for the last Saturday ot the season. Team Manager's Report. As manager of the Wellington team that played Auckland ou July 11, Mr. C. P McKenzie reported on the trip to the W.H.A. on Monday night. He said the team arrived on the Saturday morning at Auckland tired after insufficient sleep on the train. It was therefore important that teams should in future leave _ on Thursday instead of the Friday evening. The team had to dress for the match at the hotel and travel to the Papatoetoe ground for half an hour in their togs, and, as a result, their play suffered. On the trip back two or three caught colds. The Wellington eleven bad a blinding sun in their eyes throughout the second half because of the direction of the field, and they could not see the ball on certain parts of the ground. After referring to the umpiring ,Mr. McKenzie emphasised the necessity in future for having neutral umpires from associations not concerned in the fortunes of the teams engaged.

Game with Canterbury. The W.H.A. resolved to invite the Canterbury Hockey Association to play a match against Wellington, at Wellington, lon a Saturday after August 8. The Can- . terbury Indian team is also to be invited i through the Canterbury association, to meet the Wellington Indians at Wellington.
