COOK ISLANDS FRUIT
New Zealand Delegation’s Inquiry
TOUR OF PLANTATIONS By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received July 20, 11 p.m.) Rarotonga, July 19. Members of the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation have spent a busy week. On Tuesday they met all parties interested in the fruit industry at Avarua, and Messrs. Robertson (chairman) J Holland and Hunter outlined the course proposed and asked for the co-operation of all concerned. The delegation is visiting plantations and obtaining a thorough acquaintance with the conditions under which fruit is produced and handled. Members are receiving the fullest European and native co-operation.
On Thursday, Friday and Saturday the delegation visited plantations, some in the interior, involving heavy tramping and horseback rides. Luncheon was given by growers in each district, a sumptuous feast in native fashion. To-morrow and on Tuesday and Wednesday the delegation will inspect further plantations, and it will take evidence on Thursday at the Avarua courthouse.
The delegation was greatly impressed by a display by 500 pupils at the Avarua school and also by the industry of the natives, whose goodwill and hospitality has been overwhelming. Judge Ayson' and Mr. S. J. Smith, Secretary for the Cook Islands, have been of great assistance and their knowledge has been invaluable.
