MORE ORANGES FROM SOUTH AUSTRALIA
Relaxing of Embargo
ADDITIONAL 5000 CASES NEXT MONTH The Government has decided to increase the quota of South Australian oranges which will be allowed into New Zealand during the next two months. This was announced yesterday by the Minister of Customs, Hon. SV. Nash, who also indicated that if the demand necessitated it additional quantities would be allowed in. The Minister mentioned that in May last the Government had decided to relax the embargo against the importation of oranges from Australia to the extent that regulated quantities of South Australian oranges would be permitted importation. Authority was accordingly given for the importation of 50,000 cases during June, July and August. That quantity was subsequently increased to 56,000 cases. “It has now been decided to allow the importation of an additional quantity of 5000 cases during August,” Mr. Nash said, “and permission will also be given for the entry of 34,000 cases during September. With the quantities expected to come forward from the Cook Islands, there should be ample supplies to meet the Dominion's requirements. But the position will be watched carefully, and should it be necessary, further quantities will be permitted importation from South Australia.”
