"Three things struck me about New Zealand,” said Mr. Edgar Josephson, an American business man, who is visiting Christchurch. “The first is that it is the most verdant country I have ever been in; everything is green even in the winter. The second is that people do not go upstairs to go to bed; they all live on the ground floor. The third is that you have to put your overcoat on to go inside; your winters are not too severe and you just manage to do without heating in the buildings and shiver. I have noticed this in houses and hotels.”
