HUTT VALLEY MERGER

County Council Discussion

The chairman of the Hutt County Council, Cr. D. R. Hoggard, reported briefly at the monthly meeting of the council yesterday upon the recent conference of representatives of local bodies to consider the practicability of the Hutt Valley boroughs amalgamating. Mr. Hoggard said that there was a danger of the new borough, if amalgamation took place, taking a portion if the highly-valued land in the county, and leaving the county the low-valued land, with the responsibility of reading. However, the discussion had only been a preliminary one so far. If the difficulties regarding amalgamation were grappled with they might be overcome. Cr. J. J. Maher considered that Lower Hutt and Petone hud a glorious chance of giving a lead to the other local of New Zealand by amalgamating. It was natural that these boroughs should come together, as it' was almost impossible to toll where one ended and the other began. He considered that the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Nash, should give all the help and advice he could as M.P. for the district. - Cr. R. L. Button agreed that the Hutt County Council should give Lower Hutt and Petone every chance to amalgamate.
