ANZAC DAY
R.S.A. Opposes Change
Observance of Auzac Day in its present form was supported by the confer ence of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers' Association yesterday. When it adjourned on Thursday night it was considering a proposal to take a ballot among members asking whether they favoured the day’s observance on April 25, its modified observance on that date or its observance on the Sunday nearest to April 25. When the conference met yesterday morning the president. Hon. W. Perry, M.L.C., said he was satisfied there was unanimity and there was no need for further discussion. Mr. H. L. Paterson, mover of the motion, said that it had been asserted that if Anzac Day died the association would die, but he asked whether the spirit of Anzac had died in Australia where they had a more sensible way of observing Anzac Day. Voices: No.
The motion to hold a ballot was defeated with one dissentient and a remit that the policy of the association regarding the observance of Anzac Day be upheld was carried, also with one dissentient.
