ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

Wellington Association

YEAR’S WORK REVIEWED

The great volume of work being clone to-duy and the extension of activities (luring the past year were referred to by the .Mayor of AVellington, Air. T. C. A. Hislop, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet (extracts from which have been published in “The Dominion”) at the annual meeting last night of the AVellington centre of the St. John Ambulance Association. Air. Hislop, who presided, is president of the centre.

“Last year the association came to the conclusion of 50 years of activity here,” Air. Hislop proceeded. “From 1885 to about 1900 there was an organisation nominally, yet in effective work it was progressing very slowly. Then there was some criticism, and a minor accident in AVillis Street, in which a man named .Mulvaney bled to death in 1899 when he could very easily have been looked after. The association was galvanised into new activity and from that date it progressed with increasing vigour.” Referring to the past year Mr. Hislop said it had ended with a credit financially, and along with that the activities had been maintained and further developments made. The establishment of aid posts was being considered. Arrangements had been made fo r accommodation and a post at the new AVellington railway station. The blood transfusion service also had been continued. Air. Hislop thanked the many friends who had helped the association's work during the year. The motion was seconded by Dr. J. S. Elliott, chairman of the general committee, who emphasised the value of first-aid training and said that any who wanted instruction could go to the association and* learn for a nominal fee.
