FUND EXPIRING

Trentham Scholarship The likelihood of the Trentham scholarship fund closing down after next year was pointed out in the annual report of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association, adopted by the association’s conference yesterday. Acting on a resolution of the previous conference, tlie committee had endeavoured to have the eligibility year extended, but without success.

The committee approached the trustees of the Trentham scholarship fund with a view to obtaining an extension of one year in the eligibility period (raising the limit of eligibilty for bursaries for children born prior to July 1, 1920, to July 1, 1921), stated the report. The trustees were sympathetic, and agreed to amend the rule, as requested, provided that sufficient finance was provided to enable the cost of the additional allocations of bursaries to be met. The committee explored every possible avenue for the raising of the necessary amount (£4000), but without auy definite result. Therefore, as the finance was not forthcoming, the trustees regretfully decided not to amend the rule. The whole of the funds available for 1936 had been allocated, and no further applications could be entertained until October, 1936, New applications were to be advertised for at that date, but the number of new awards granted would be dependent entirely on the number of renewals of existing awards that had to be considered. It was not likely, however, that there would be any funds available after 1937, and the Trentham scholarship fund would then close down.

The committee felt that it was appropriate to record, on behalf of the hundreds of ex-service men throughout the Dominion whose children had participated in the provisions of the fund, its sincere thanks and appreciation to the trustees of the Trentham scholarship fund for the care and attention so willingly given to the administration of the fund since its inception in 1920, to date.
