Imperial Projects

(From "The Dominion,” June 1», 1911.)

The Imperial Conference, on the motion of Sir Joseph Ward, agreed: ‘‘That this conference affirms that it is desirable that Great Britain connect Great Britain and Newfoundland through Canada with Australia and New Zealand by the best mail service possible.” * * *

Sir Joseph Ward moved to reaffirm the resolution adopted by the conference of 1907: “That in view of the social and political advantages to accrue from a system of international penny postage, this conference recommends to his Majesty’s Government the advisability, if and when the opportunity occurs, of approaching the Governments of other States, members of the Universal Postal Union, in order to obtain further reductions of postal rates, with a view to a more general, and, if possible, a universal, adoption of the penny rate.” This resolution was reaffirmed by the conference.

Another immense women’s suffrage demonstration was made in London. Mrs. Drummond, riding on horseback, led a vast procession, five miles long, of the Women’s Social and Political League, through the streets. The women marched seven abreast, and the total taking part is put at 40,000, representing the different counties. There were seventy bands scattered through the procession. One section symbolised women’s part in history. Then came 700 of the suffragettes who had suffered imprisonment. These were dressed in white. Another section of the pageant represented the greatness and unity of the Empire.
