Importance of Agriculture
“I wonder if agriculture is occupying a sufficiently important place in the minds of those responsible for planning our national de fences. Surely it should come first in a programme of national defence and not be among the ‘also rans.’ We must avoid at all costs the chaos of 1916 to 1918. Then orders were given to plough up tens of thousands of acres of land, of which quite a large- proportion was unsuitable for wheat growing, and was, in consequence, never sown. At the time we were short of horses, short of tractors, short of everything—except promises. Yet. if war should come in the next few years we shall find ourselves quite unprepared. The Government and. the country must face up to the realities. This neglect of our primary industry, this disregard for the safety of our population, is a real danger.”—Sir Herbert Morgan, in an address in London recently.
