Shipbreaking activities during the first quarter of this year reached a figure considerably in excess of that recorded during the preceding throe months, and were higher also as compared with the corresponding quarter a year ago.. The tonnage so disposed of. however, must not be taken as a true indication of the actual position in regard to obsolete tonnage, for a considerable proportion consisted of ‘‘scrap and build” vessels sold to shipbreakers, and. in addition, two liners accounted tor nearly 67,000 tons. According to Lloyd’s List records, the aggregate world tonnage (excluding American) disposed of to shipbreakers during tlie first three months of 1936 was 339,393 tons gross, the vessels numbering 104. of which 19 vessels were under 300 tons gross. ‘ This compares with 114 ships, of 264,094 tons gross, in the December quarter. and 119 vessels, of 330,475 tons gross, in the first quarter of 1935.
