TILDEN’S CIRCUS

Professional Tennis in U.S.A. 17 Al LING in their efforts to have Wilmer Allison turn professional, Tilden aud bis partner, William O’Brien, decided to have two teams —six men and two women (states an American writer). The groups consisted of:—(1) Vines, Stoefen. Lott and Berkeley Bell. (2) Ethel Burkhart Arnold, Jane Sharp, Bruce Barnes and Tilden. Both groups combined to open the 1936 professional indoor season in _ Dladison Square Garden. A near-capacity crowd of 15.000 paid £4345 to see the matches. The main event was supposed to be the Vines-Stoefen match, but Vines had little trouble beating the blonde Californian. Forty-three-year-old Bill Tilden, defeated Bell, the acrobatic Texan. 6-1, 6-4; Dlrs. Arnold easilv defeated Jane Sharp. 6-4. 6-4. Vines and Bell vanquished Lott and Stoefen in the doubles, 6-4, 6-4; and in the concluding match Mrs. Arnold and Stoefen defeated Dliss Sharp and Tilden,

' groups then moved to Chicago, and after their matches there the Vines team started out west and the Tilden -roup toured the eastern cities. Later on they exchanged territories, so that tennis fans had an opportunity to see both groups. Attendances have not been so large this year and it looks as if someone such as Perrv Von Cramm or Donald Budge, who can give Vines a real battle, will have tr be secured for next season.
