Instigating Australian Tariff RESENTMENT IN JAPAN London, May 31. Thei “Daily Telegraph's” Tokio correspondent says that in certain circles Britain is accused of instigation of the increased Australian tariff against Japan. Tire resentment is increased by the belief that Britain is also behind America’s increased duties. It is suggested that this is British and American retaliation against Japanese smuggling in North China and evasion of Customs in respect of goods in which British investors are interested. Sir Ernest Thompson, chairman of the mission which visited Australia on behalf of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and which reached London yesterday on its return, referred in a statement to the recent Australian tariff changes, and said he was sure that Lancashire would not only he grateful to the Australian Government, but would endorse its policy in a reciprocal sense. The report of the mission, he announced, would include a section on the marketing of Australian products in the thickly-populated area of which Manchester is the centre. BELGIUM WOULD BENEFIT Minister Sees Misunderstanding Sydney, June 1. The Minister in charge of Trade Treaties, Sir Henry Gullet, said that the Belgian Government’s action in terminating the trade agreement with Australia must be based on a misunderstanding. because Belgium would gain on the whole by the new duties.
