Garden Circle Meeting

Baskets of lovely berries from native and exotic trees and shrubs decorated the show table when the Pioneer Club garden circle met recently. The competition for a basket of berries brought a- number of very attractive exhibits, Mrs. Petheriek’s prize bflng won bv Mrs. E. J. Rightou, who decorated a’ basket with native berries and .ipecially-selectcd native foliage and ■grasses' from her own garden. During the month several circle members planted on the Hutt Road area allotted to the garden circle for beautifying, six kowhais, a gift from Mrs. Knox Gilmer, and tamarisks, given by Miss Isaacs. The monthly lecture was given by the director of parks and reserves, Mr. J. G. MacKenzie. who chose as his subject, "The Herbaceous Border.” It was a very informative address and much appreciated by members. Mr. MacKenzie drew special attention to eucalyptus campbelli, as in May it supplied the tuis and bellbirds with the nectar so necessary for their well-being. Methods adopted for successful greenhouse culture were also touched upon by the speaker, and at the conclusion of the address Miss Cooper thanked Mr. MacKenzie for his talk.
