FOXTON CUP

Win For Prostration SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE Jubilee Song’s Memorial

(By

The Watches.)

Favoured by a bright, warm afternoon, in contrast to the cold wind with showers of raiu in adjacent districts, the roxtou Racing Club’s winter meeting on Saturday was a very successful gathering. Attracted by the line day, there was a 'jirge crowd present; the going was excellent, and racing keen, while a substantial totalisator increase was shown. Prostration maintained his recent term with a win in the Foxton Cup, and Mr. 11. W. Moss had the pleasure of collecting another trophy, this time a cutlery canteen. valued at £25, presented by Mrs. S. R. Austin. A stop-watch for the trainer and gokl-mounted whip for tlie rider were also presented by Miss J. Austin and Mr. Drinald Austin respectively. A complimentary speech was made by the member" for the district, Mr. C. L. Hunter, and the trophies were presented by Mrs. Austin. The Kebbell Memorial was won by the local horse Jubilee Song, and the steeplechase by Taura Lad. Tiger Bill fell in the steeplechase, and his rider, B. Liddall. was conveyed to hospital, the doctor fearing a fractured pelvis. R. Miles, the rider _of Royal Banquet, who fell over Tiger Bill, escaped with a shaking. . The totalisator, under the single pool (75-25) system, handled £7147, against £6009 under win and place last year, an increase of £ll3B. Won AH the Way. Helios led uh the way to win the maiden race comfortably from the Marton winner, Garter Bed, who was well hack early, but finished strongly. Golden Anne, who was rather a surprise favourite, had every chance, following the winner to the straight, and then weakening. Kentucky Song and Sunder were next. The winner, who carries the same colours as Count Willonyx, is a well-bred three-year-old, but is a bit on the small side.’ Garter Red was unlucky. He was rapidlv making up the impossible amount of ground he stood up the winner. Hurdles to Speed. Speed, favourite for the hurdles, scored a decisive win. Blue Boy- led him over three fences, but Speed then went to the front. Spender was the only one with any chance with him over the last six furlongs, and although he was handy at the last fence Speed drew away again on the flat. Count Willonyx was a poor third, and Blue Boy fourth, with the rei-'t at intervals, and the Marton winner, Royal King, a bad last. Speed improved in his jumping and was always going will, though he was not too clover nt the last obstacle. Count Willonyx hit the second lafrt fence very hard, otherwise he would have been closer at. the finish. ■ There was money for Glenvnne. but lie jumped poorly and soon faded out of the picture. Blue Boyshaped satisfactorily for a novice. Cup to Prostration. After a elow first five furlongs, the field in the Foxton Cup closed up over the last half, Lapel, who had got badly away, sweeping round the outer to the lead, with Alchemic and Rose 1 al, with Prostration handy. Prostration drew away from this bunch for a decisive win over Hunting Lodge, who finished better than Alchemic and Lapel, who were followed by Slippery and Gay Boy. Prostration won well. Hunting Lodge put in a good finish. Lapel was unlucky and after getting away w poorly made his run too soon. Gay Boy did not get the best of passages, and the slow early pace did not suit him.

Always in Front. B. 11. Morris repeated his first race victory by leading always in the hack sprint, with the favourite Happy Hunting. De Trop loomed up as a possibility in the straight, but Happy Hunting won fairly comfortably. Minnow was a poor third, and Vinco fourth, followed by Pin t Chapter, Happy Hunting Ims plenty of puce, but the opposition was moderate. First Chapter lost his chance by dwelling at the start and giving, away a lot of ground. Favourite Brought Down., The steeplechase was won very easily by Taura Dad, but his task would have been hard had the favourite, Royal Banquet, not fallen. Royal Banquet and Taura Lad were just gathering the early leader, Tiger Bill, when the latter toppled over at the five furlongs, and Royal Banquet crashed over him. Royal Banquet had previously steered into trouble over the stand double , the first time, through going into the fences close behind horses running about, lint the final mishap finished him. Taura Lad was left with an unassailable lead and he won by a big margin from The Ranger, who made no jumping errors. Otaki was a poor third, and Illawarra fourth. Royal Banquet gave a promising display for a first attempt over country. Late Kun Just Fails. Features of the Kebbell Memorial were the collapse of Diatomous in the straight, and the final run of Boomerang, which just failed to reach the winner’s nose. Diatomous was soon clear of Jubilee Song, who in turn was clear of the others, Boomerang, who had been squeezed at the start, being well back. Jubilee Song had Diatomous gone as soon as they reached the straight but Boomerang flashed up with a sensational hurst, and Jubilee Song just squeezed home. Royal Bengal was a moderate third, followed by Beau GalLaute.'West Tor and Takakun, none of whom was ever likely. Jubilee Song had the hard part of the race, being forced to go after Diatomous and then being left in front witli a furlong to go. Boomerang put up a great effort, and there is little doubt he should have won. It was a better race than he showed at Carterton, despite the weight difference. Easy for the Favourite. The favoiirife. Reipar. waited for his opponents to the straight in the concluding event, and then went past them in a few strides to win easily’. The others finished all bunched, La Parleuse, an outsider, just heading Sunder and Script, who had made all the pace. Reipar has apparently struck a patch of forni. but be has run well in small fields which have enabled him to go to the'ouler all the time without covering much extra ground.
