Brave Tussle For Badges

Winter bowls is now firmly established in Wellington. In Auckland some of the ordinary clubs are able to have and play upon a winter green in the open (as they do at Sydney and Brisbane), but Wellington is too far south for such luxuries, so has to seek sanctuary beneath the expansive roof of the Winter Show building at John Street, where bowls are played each evening and every week-end in comfort. . , Saturday afternoon witnessed the finest game of the season in the fight for the badges, excitement prevailing up to the last bowl. According to the rules ot the competition the holders have to be beaten. As Saturday’s game resulted iu a tie on the twenty-first head, there was no extra head to decide the issue. The challengers had just failed. The score was 20-all. The rinks concerned were as follows: Holders—Cooper, Morpeth, Bell, Doherty (s.); challengers—J. Ross, Forsyth, Stouebanks, F. Ross (s.). The holders, H. Ross, Hanson, Munro and Duncan (s.), 22, beat the challengers, Elvine, Daly, Johnson, Webley (s.), 18, for the ferns. Friendly games resulted as follow: — Burbidge beat Ricketts, 22-13; Reece beat Johnston, 22-13; Whitelaw beat Goodall, 28-13.; McCune beat J. Hale, 21-20; Lawrie beat Watts, 18-14; Hart beat Conder, 23-17; Donald beat Taylor, 24-20; Ryman v. Burns, 17-17. The following are the results of the second round of the New Zealand association’s tournament (for New Zealandborn players) :— _ Section A.—Gray 25, Ryan 15; Edwards 25, Russell 19; Martin 22, Wilson 19; Fletcher 21, Jacobs 19. Section B.—Paton 17, Kuah 16; Osborne 24, Urwin 15; Bedell 24, Smith 23; Woolley 26, Warwick 16. Section C. —Brackenridge 27, Bland 11; O’Neil 22, Nicholls 9; Wells 18, Naylor 17; Johns 21, McKay 4. Section D.—Lock 21, Estall 12; Sheary 22, Nelson 16; Duncan 18, Bonner 17; Parry 25, Conder 17. The following is the draw for the third round. Sections A and B will play this evening and sections O and D and Wednesday : — Section A.—Ryan plays Wilson, Gray plays Edwards, Fletcher plays Russell, Martin plays Jones, Jacobs a bye.
