BRITISH DEFENCE NECESSITIES

Plans For Manufacture (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, May 29. Replying to a debate raised in tbe House of Commons on the motion for the adjournment by Sir Edward Grigg (Con., Altrincham), who, supported by Sir Robert Horne (Con., . Billhead), contended that the responsibility of the Government iu relation to the manufacture and supply of defence requirements was so heavy and urgent as to warrant the appointment of an additional Minister, Sir Thomas Inskip, Minister of Co-ordination of Defence, argued that a change of responsible direction would not affect the rate of progress in meeting the problems in question. Of the progress already made he gave as examples arrangements concluded for the manufacture of air frames and air engines for the Air Ministry. Agreement had been reached with the Austin Company and with Messrs. Rootes, two of tbe largest motor undertakings in tbe country, to erect factories for the production of air frames, and designs and lay-out, including plans for railway sidings, diversion of roads, and aerodromes were already complete and specifications for tenders were about to be issued. As to engines, seven firms of acknowledged eminence In tbe manufacture of internal combustion engines—Austin, Rootes, Daimler, Standard. Singer, Rover and Wolseley—were co-operat-ing, and had put forward a detailed scheme for securing the necessary output with an absolute minimum of delay.
