Testing Work at Waihi

Uniter nil arrangement entered into with the Waihi (now Martha) Gold Mining Company, some two years ago, members of the geophysical staff of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research spent the greater part of 1934 and the early part of 1935 in making extensive magnetic, seismic, and electrical surveys on various parts of the company’s property, with the object of determining the thickness of the recent strata and ascertaining whether the goldbearing andesites exist below these deposits. The results of the investigations undertaken in the hope of locating areas considered likely to prove reef-bearing, together with plans, were sent to the London office of the company, with a recommendation from lhe local management that at least two bore holes should be put down with a view to testing the ground in portion of the property. The recommendation met with the approval of the directors, and a start was made recently with the first hole, the point chosen for drilling being between the Union and Favdna reef systems, adjacent to the Union hill, to the east of the recent mine working. A certain amount of development work was carried out on these reefs near the surface tnnny years ago. the values on the whole being on the low side, mid it now remains to be seen whether the ore bodies will show improvement in depth. The holo, which is being put down at an angle of HOdeg., will probably be sunk to a depth of between 400 ft. and 500 ft,
