Hope Gibbons Shield

PONEKE CLUB’S SUCCESS

Weather conditions in Wellington for the initial event of a series of three races for the Hope Gibbons Shield, were anything but pleasant on Saturday afternoon. Nevertheless a keen contest resulted, and there was a representative attendance of officials and supporters from the three local chilis.

xlfter Mr. A. B. Gibbons, jun., had addressed the gathering, six teams were dispatched at five-minute intervals. Starting positions were as follow:—Petone B, Poneke B, Port Nicholson B, Fetoue A, Poneke xV and Port Nicholson A. Both Petone combinations were unfortunate iu possessing only four riders instead of five; nevertheless, the A team held their redoubtable Poneke and Port Nicholson opponents until the final stages, when they faded somewhat. They still possess an excellent opportunity of annexing the shield, Poneke 15 rode remarkably well, and in the early stages were actually leading Fort Nicholson A. team were unfortunate in losing Franklyn early in the contest, and Les Sowerby, who crashed heavily in the latter stages, his injuries requiring medical attention. Franklyn continued in the race and finished some time after his team mates.

In annexing the first race Poneke A also bad misfortune in losing Dutton early, so that (here was more merit in their performance than the result suggests, Dutton also saw matters to a finish. His team mates thoroughly deserved their wiu by splendid combination, and will be a tough proposition in the two remaining races.
