At Hastings on "Wednesday morning Royal Banquet (R. Miles) and Kaokaoroa (E. Deslaudes) were given a round and a half of the country. Royal Banquet went well for a novice, though there is still plenty of room for improvemerit. He will be ridden by Miles at Foxton to-day. Riding at Foxtou. The lightweight jockey L. Clifford will be riding at Foxton to-day, when his mounts will include Rose Vai aud Jubilee Song. He will return to Auckland for the second day at Ellerslie, and then come south again for the Otaki meeting on Thursday and Saturday of next week. Out of Hacks. By his success in the first division of the Otorohanga Handicap at To Rapa last week Pukeko lost his hack status, although he will be able to run out his nominations in that class at Ellerslie. Pukeko is a good galloper of whom the best has probably not yet been seen, and should perform well in any race he contests at the coming meeting. Has Not Won the Derby. The Derby continues to elude the crack English jockey, Gordon Richards. He was thought to have a great chance this year on Taj Akbar, as this colt had in the past few weeks been one of the favourites, but be proved to be only the second best of the Aga Khan’s great team. Last year Richards rode Hairan. the second string of the Aga Khan, but, though he was second favourite to Bahram, he could only run seventh. Prior to that, Richards had been second on Easton two years ago, when Windsor Lad won.
