Treatment of Appendicitis

Sir, —To any person who is fair minded and free from prejudice, it must be so obvious that the trend of politics is toward co-operation as opposed to the individualistic concept—usually covered by the term “private enterprise”—that it is a waste of time to follow your correspondent “Ajax” through the mazes of his own unreason.

“Ajax” admits quite frankly that “a more desirable and satisfactory system must arise,” but clings pathetically to the policy that has been such a hopeless failure that in the interest of humanity it must be interfered with more and more. The evidence is overwhelming that organised society is moving—and this with increasing velocity—toward a recognition of the basic principle that when private enterprise is shown to be inimical to social well-being, then, in the interest of organised society, private enterprise must be superseded. That is all there is in the problems involved. “Ajax” harps upon the benefits which accrued through the efforts of private enterprise. Admitting that private enterprise did play an important part in the progress of organised society toward increasing the total of wealth production, to-day everyone knows that production for profits instead of for use has got the whole world into an awful mess. _ The tragic evils of unemployment are directly traceable to production for profits, private enterprise. Not only so, but the nmazing progress in scientific means of wealth production is not allowed to be used "in the interest of organised society by those who control the financial interests which still dominate world affairs, because there is no hope of increased profits in allowing real wealth production to progress as it might so easily do. One could fill many columns of your paper, Sir, in proof of this assertion, but the facts are so well known to most people that it is unnecessary to quote the facts. “The trend of politics” is unquestionably toward co-operation as opposed to private enterprise, and violent denunciation of the philosophy of Socialism will not stay the progress toward saner economic and social conditions. And that is all I desire to say to your correspondent “Ajax.” In conclusion, I desire to thank you, Sir, for your courtesy in allowing me the use of your correspondence column to enable me to state my views' to your readers. —I am, etc., JOHN SYKES Wellington, May 29.
