Unless the sentences now being passed by the courts on those convicted of killing or maiming people through negligent* driving on the roads are shown to have a definite deterrent effect on others, ntiblic opinion will certainly demand more drastic measures Ihe Minister of Transport has declared his intention of taking measute. fo deal effectively with the problem, but nothing short of drast c nunishment will suffice to deal with the class o offender who it s nlainlv to be seen, is at present unimpressed by the sentences hitherto imposed upon his kind. Tn spite of these sentences people are being killed or maimed by irresponsibles who drive motor vehicl.. while under the influence of liquor. Such persons are guilty.<> criminal negligence, and the law should provide for their prosecution and punishment accordingly. •
