TELEGRAPHIC CHESS

Dominion Championship Starts Next Week Play in the preliminary round of this .year’s 20-a-side telegraphic cheas matches to decide the club championship of New Zealand is scheduled to begin at 6.30 p.m. on Saturday week, June 6, and to conclude the following Saturday. The pairings are Auckland Chess Club v. Wellington Chess Club and Otago Chess Club v. Canterbury Chess Club. The inter-island final between the two winning clubs will be decided on July 18 and 25. Tlie Wellington team is drawn from the 50 members of the Wellington Chess Club and is not, as is sometimes thought, representative of all tlie 300 known players residing in Greater Wellington. The Bledisloc Cup is at present held by the Canterbury Chess Club, which last year defeated the Auckland club in the inter-island final by two games'. Since this contest was inaugurated in 1922 it has been won twice by the Auckland club, twice by the Otago club, once by the Canterbury club, and eight times by the "Wellington club. Tlie North Island has thus provided the champion club 10 times in 13 years. The full-round tourney which was played in the first nine years gave place to a sudden-death tourney in 1932 owing to the increased cost of telegraphic matches.
