INTEREST IN LABOUR GOVERNMENT

Australian Attitude SOME MISLEADING STATEMENTS Much interest is being taken by Australians in New Zealand’s Labour Government, stated .Mr. Howard Elliott, who returned to Wellington last night by the Monowai after six weeks in Melbourne and Sydney. During his stay in Australia, he said, he was continually questioned concerning the measures originated and enacted bv the Labour Government here. A series of articles in a Sydney paper gave a very distorted view of the situation, and estimates formed over there differed greatly from those in New Zealand. For instance, it was stated that 90 per cent, of the people of New Zealand accepted the Labour Government, which implied that 90 per cent, favoured the Government. ‘‘While there is a disposition here to give the Government every opportunity it is wholly misleading to represent’ that 90 per cent, of New Zealanders favour it,” said Mr. Elliott. On many occasions, in clubs and other places, he had been asked about the experiments in legislation being made in New Zealand. Extreme interest was taken by the people of Australia, who had had some experience of Labour Governments within the Commonwealth. '
