WORK OF SESSION

Another Busy Week

Ahead

MORTGAGES & RENTS

Transport Bill In Final Stage

Although a busy week is ahead of Parliament it will be less exhausting Mian was anticipated, due to the decision not to begin Monday sittings this week. It is not yet certain whether tile House will sit next Saturday, bu‘ there is a prospect of one or two late sittings.

Cabinet met on Saturday morning and dealt with several administrative questions, but no decisions were reached on policy matters. Another meeting will be held to-day. This evening the Prime Minister, Kt. Hon. M. J. Savage, accompanied by lis private secretary, Mr. C. A. Jeffery, will leave by the Limited express for Hamilton, where he will open the Waikato winter show to-morrow. Mr. Savage will return to Wellington on Wednesday morning. The first legislative business this week will he the third reading of the Transport Licensing Amendment Bill, but it is not expected that the debate will be unduly long, tbe measure having been thoroughly discussed in the House since its introduction. If present plans are adhered to, the first of the new Bills still to be introduced before the midwinter recess will be one dealing with the reconstruction of the Mortgage Corporation on the lines of lhe State Advances Department which the Corporation replaced. The provisions of the Bill have already been

approved by caucus of the Government Party, and tbe measure is now in tbe hands of the Law Draftsman. The Prime Minister said on Saturday thwi he could not give the exact date of its introduction, bub it would appear fairly soon. Another Bill whicli is likely to appear in the near future will deal witn rents, particularly in the direction of safeguarding tenants against exploitation. Its main provision will prevent the eviction of any tenant until the circumstances have been reviewed oy a magistrate, who will be given greater power to deal with such applications. No date has yet been mentioned for the introduction of the Finance Bill, which will contain a general order restoring wages and salaries to bbe 1931 level, but it is certain to appear before the recess.

It does not appear likely now that the House will rise at the end of t>he month. Indeed, there are indications that the adjournment may not occur before June 11 or 12.
