Improved Membership and

Finances

Both the liuances and the membership list have shown a steady gain during the. past year, slates the annual report of the directors of the Moilington Caledonian Society, to be presented at the anutial meeting to be held in the I 0.0. F. Hall, Allen Street, ou Wednesday. The assets of the society have beeu written down Lo present-day values, aud numerically the society is in a strong position; 26 new members joined during the year, and the membership now stands at 1 <O. Of this total, 21 are life members, 17 pipe-band members and 132 ordinary membeis’. Ten inglesides were held during the year, uuder the guidance of Mr. J. Stirling as master of ceremonies. There were large attendances at the two children’s nights of the year, Hallowe’en aud the Christmas party. Burns night was an outstanding success, taking the form of a concert and dauee, and St. Andrew’s night, was celebrated by the Wellington Association of Scots Society by the holding of a national concert in the Town Hall, in which the Caledonian Society co-operated in making the concert a success. . The dau' iug competitions, for which the children of members are eligible, furnished two excellent evenings entertainment. The Graham-Moffat Cup, for dancers between 12 and 16 years ot age, was won by Miss Jean O'Connor, and the Beenle-Ballantyne Memorial Cup, for dancers under 12 years of age, by Miss Meta McKenna. A new trophy, the McDonald Cup, was competed for in the sailor's hornpipe and Irish jig, to children under .14 years of age. Jh6 winner this year was Miss Meta McKenna. _ : ~ .. The pipe band paraded at all the society’s functions during the year. The directors record their appreciation of the services rendered by Ripe-Major \W. Fraser, who is retiring fr °ni tuts position, over a number of years. Under his able guidance the band has reached a high standard of efficiency tn the playing of pi]W music. Mr. Charles Stewart, jun„ has been elected to succeed Mr. Fraser as pipe-major. Progress continues in the raising of funds to equip the band with uew uniforms During the year, by an art. union and other means, £76/15/5 was added to the funds, making a total in hand of £l«o 18/2. It is hoped that during the uew year sufficient money will be raised to secure the uniforms. A library for the use of members has been established, comprising a valuable collection of books donated to the society in past years, and held in trust by various members. These books have been collected aud are now housed by Mr. J. .Stirling, who has been appointed librarian.
