COUNTY CUP

Win For Prostration

CARTERTON RESULTS

First Chapter Wins Double

(By

The Watches.)

The annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held at Claievile on Saturday in fine, hut cold, weat.ier. J. he track was in excellent order. Racing was interesting and results fairly well anti'ipated by the public. Prostration won a handsome gold cup for his owner, JI.. JT W Sloss, when he scored in the \\ alrarapa County Cup Handicap, and Vest Tor was decorated Wth the Memorial Ribbon when he won the Bunny Memorial for Mr. W. R. P. Cooper. A trophy of a canteen of cutlery was won by the consistent Snowball for her owner, Mi • W. Ferguson, in the Gladstone Hack. A feature of the day was the double success of First Chapter, trained by W. H. Corlett at Hastings for Mrs. JI. B. Fletcher. Prostration and Camilla Horn were the oiily winners from Treutham stables.' : . , 4 There was a. fair attendance and the totalizator handled £6OOB, an increase of £lO2 on-Jast year. , In the running of, the fourth race tnc Carterton Hack. Mister Quex was put on the fence iindiat an inquiry the stewards, accepted the explanation of J. Dooley, tne rider of Minnow. N. Cavaney, the rider of Mister Ouex, had his left leg badly bruised. Won after a Struggle. In a poor class field for the Maiden Plate Camilla Horn and Le Touquet divided favouritism and they fought out the finish. Le Touquet made the pace but was joined by Camilla Horn at the half. Genial handy. Le Touquet and Camilla Horn were both flat out in the straight, the struggle ending in a head win for Camilla Horn. Sir Ronald, who ran off the course entering the straight, was a poor third, and the rest were well beaten. It was the poorest class of maiden seen for a long time, and had Sir Ronald not run off the course he would probably have won. A Mild Surprise. Youssipof, favourite for the highweight. made the pace to the straight and then faded righ» out. Contract, always well placed and going well, moved round the leaders entering the straight, and just as Spender had beaten the leaders he was caught and beaten fairly decisively by Contract. Spender covered a good deal of extra ground during (he running, but Contract won rather well all the same. Stitchb’rd whs pocketed at the critical stages, and his close third looked.a bit unlucky not to have been iniproved Upon. Emotion was well back early, but he made up . ground at the fitiish. His rider was advised by the stipendiary , steward to be a bit more vigorous in his riding. Prostration’s Cup. Prostration, always well placed, won the County Cup very handily at the finish. ' • . , Diatomous set a fast pace well onf from the others and the first to go after him wits Hazoor. That he went far too early was obvious when Prostration and Arctic King made their runs and collected both Diatomous and Hazoor without any difficulty. Prostration ran on to take the dear lead into the straight, but over the final stages Arctic King, who had received a check when attempting to go up On an opening inside, came at Prostration strongly. Prostration, shaken up, produced a reserve effort, but he may have been troubled to win had Arctic King got a good passage. Might who was tailed off early, put in a good finish to beat Hazoor for third money, but he was a long way from a dividend. A Good Hack. First Chapter came through on the inner to beat Quake in the hack sprint after the latter had run wide into the straight. It appeared as if Quake was unlucky to lose the ground, but First Chapter won far too well for any excuses. Blygain went out wide with Quake aiid was a creditable third, but the others were outclassed. Won all the Way. Snowball led all the way to win the Gladstone Hack, and never gave her op-1 ponents a look in. She is in great.order] at present, but on her recent winning

form she was well handicapped. Stitchbird proved that he was unlucky in the highweight by finishing on for second, but ho was a long way from the winner. Weight held Boomerang and Geitel, and Vinco flattered to the turn only. Wins First Up. That it does not take racing to condition a winner was proved by West Tor iu the Bunny Memorial. It was his first start since December, but he was always going well, and when he moved past the pacemaker into the straight he had the race won. Royal Bengal put in a good late run but he failed to reach West Tor, who hung on gamely. Slippery was disappointing. In the rear early, he moved up at the half-mile, only to drop back quickly again and out of the contest. First Chapter’s Double. A 101 b. penalty for his earlier win did not stop First Chapter from scoring again in the hack scurry. He won Well for he was last early, but dtspite (he fact that Quake got a good run through on the fence into the straight, First Chapter cut her down and won easing up. State Bank was a poor third, but showed a glimpse of form. The winnr/ is a good hack and will be heard of again. Gladium was slow to get going, but moved up into fourth at the finish. Blygain Improves. Blygain improved on,her third placing earlier to win practically all the way in the concluding event. Minnow actually headed her on the turn and into line, but Blygain then came through on the inner and ran away from her field. Reviva’, an outsider, came from an early last to itcltd the favourite Royal Solo out Of a dividend. Royal Solo did not appear to get the best of passages. Vinco and Geitel again and failed though they ran fairly well. < Details of the Racing MAIDEN* PLATE, of £6O: second £l2, third £li. Six furlongs. 1 P. A. Belliss's b. m.
