FOUR FIREMEN LEAVE THEIR SHIP
Canadian Victor Delayed ANOTHER’S SUITCASE TIED TO RIGGING Some difficulty was experienced yesterday afternoon with the firemen of the Canadian National steamer Canadian Victor, a number of them seeming very loath to sail in the vessel. Originally timed to leave Wellington at 2 p.m. for’ New York, Boston and Montreal, it was 5 o’clock before the vessel pulled out from the King’s Wharf. Even then she left four of her firemen in Wellington and warrants for their arrest have been issued. Four men were signed on to replace those who failed io make an appearance before the ship sailed. Apart from these four, a number of others gave trouble, and the wharf police had a busy afternoon rounding up the men, putting them on board the ship and keeping them there until she sailed. One man who came ashore carrying his belongings in a suitcase was put on board again, and as an inducement to keep him there, his suitcase was fastened to the rigging well up tbe foremast. This seemed effective as he made no further attempt to leave the vessel. As she is one of the vessels bought by Hie newly-formed Alontreal-Austra-lia-New Zealand Line, it is probable that this will be the Canadian Victor's last voyage.
