Mr. Stanley Baldwin spoke for 45 minutes at a private dinner of backbenchers. Great interest was shown on account of rumours of Cabinet reconstruction and suggestions that the Government bad been weakened by recent events. Mr. Baldwin said lie hoped that members of the House of Commons would realise that, though the Government's majority was large, its force and vigour could be maintained only by constant loyalty. He declared that a strong Britain was the greatest safeguard for peace in Europe. The “Daily Mail’s" political correspondent understands that Mr. J. 11. Thomas. Colonial Secretary, is contemplating resigning He is beginning to feel the strain of nine successive years as a Minister, and doctors advise him to take a long rest. His friends say that freedom from the cares of office would give him an opportunity to deal in a more personal manner with some of the matters which arose during the hearing of the Budget tribunal.
