Autumn

Dame Autumn tripped daintily across the landscape, her rich brown hair streaming behind her. Mr. Wind struck up with a lively tune, and blew the raretinted leaves from the trees. .The remaining ones only laughed at his tricks, and clung affectionately to the trees. The woods, a sombre mass in winter, now revealed their varied tints., warm yellow, green, russet brown and blushing crimson. Scarlet-breasted robins hopped here and there, while brighteyed squirrels gathered their harvest of nuts for the long winter months, when the ground would be covered with a thick blanket of snow. In the orchards the trees were laden with rosy apples, and the village maidens, conspicuous in their scarlet bonnets, went from tree to tree gathering the rosy horde. Swish, swish, went the mowers in the fields, and a sea of golden wheat, mingled with nodding poppies, fell before the keen blades.

There was a typical autumn sunset and a short twilight, then the stars rushed out. Night drew a soft purple veil across the earth, then night reigned supreme and triumphant. All was at rest. — Original, by White Dove (IS).
