“BUN” PENNIES
British Housewives’ Craze Thousands of housewives in Britain are saving a shilling in the pound by carefully examining their change. A fashion has developed for collecting “bun” pennies. These depict Queen Victoria as a young woman with her hair dressed in a bun at the back of her neck.
Bank managers are now being frequently asked by housewives for silver in exchange for sums of five, ten, or fifteen shillings of “bun” pennies which they have saved from their housekeeping .money. Among .these bank managers is Mr. IL J. Martin, of Musweil Hill, London, an expert on British coinage, who recently revealed to the ‘’Sunday Chronicle” some interesting fads about "bun” pennies.
“Queen Victoria was in her forties when these pennies were first issued, and during the 35 years which elapsed before a new design was struck the Mint issued 358,437.600 of them,” he said.
“Millions of these pennies have been Jost, and it is calculated that to-day they do not number more than 90,000000.”
