Further Reports Of Meetings Otaki. The following are further reports of meetings of Women’s Institutes held during the month: — Mrs. Synnott presided over a small attendance at the Otaki Women’s Institute May meeting, at which two new members wore welcomed, and two members who have been ill were welcomed back. Mrs. Wallington received congratulations on being returned to the school committee. A vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Duffin for her excellent report on the annual council meeting. Mrs. Fogden wag elected as delegate to attend the Dominion conference. An amusing competition, “cats,” was won by Mrs. C. Jones. A crystal trophy was donated by Mrs. Cyril Baker for the monthly competitions for the ensuing year. Bulls. The monthly meeting of the Bulls Women’s Institute was held recently, there being a large attendance of members and friends. One new member was enrolled. An invitation was received from the Marton Junction Institute to their birthday celebration on June 2. The president, Mrs. Churchill, who will shortly leave the district, sent in. her resignation, which was accepted with regret. In a short speech, she thanked all members for the help they had given her during her term of office. Mrs. 11. Ellery was elected president. Mrs. J. S. Tricker was appointed delegate to attend the Dominion conference at Dunedin. Mrs. Churchill was presented with a toilet set and a teddy bear for her small daughter Betty. Mrs. Armstrong, on behalf of the folk dancers,, handed Mrs. Churchill a pair of gloves. The points competition for the day was for six varieties of jam, the winners being: Mrs. D. Ross, Mrs. V. Andrews, Mrs. J. S. Tricker, Mrs. H. Edwards. In the brassware competition, Mrs. _ Cornfoot and Miss Tricker were the winners. Mrs. Drew, Sanson, judged the competitions, and was accorded a vote of thanks. During the afternoon Mrs. Churchill road a paper on the- composer. Sir Edward Elgar, and Mrs. Tricker sang “Land of Hope and Glory.” The folk dancers gave several dances. Silverstreain. Favoured with perfect weather, sixty members attended the monthly meeting of the Silverstreain Women’s Institute. There was a number of visitors present, who were cordially welcomed by the president, Mrs. Spackman. „ A full and interesting report of the South Wellington Federation Conference held at Paraparaumu was read, and Mrs; Spackman was congratulated on her election to that committee. The suggestion that a dance should be organised by the nearby institutes to raise funds for the Free Ambulance was wholeheartedly supported, and delegates will attend a meeting to discuss that proposal. The annual men’s evening will be held on June 17. An interesting letter from a former member, describing work done by the institutes near Palmerston North, was much appreciated. After tea had been served by Mesdames Chapman-Taylor, Hayley, Holcroft, Jones, and Pierard, a demonstration of poker-work was given. Members learnt how to hold the “needle.” and how to make the various background patterns. In appreciation Mrs. Hobbs, the demonstrator, was presented with a posy of berries and autumn-tinted leaves. The competition was for the best quilted article. A cushion worked in Italian

quilting by Miss M. Muraby was placed first, 1 and Mrs. Taylor’s entry was second. The afternoon closed with a pleasant social half-hour. Pongaroa. There was a good attendance at the Pongaroa W.I. May .meeting, Mrs. Mayman ■ presiding. Visitors were welcomed from Thames and Te Rehunga. Miss Kent was elected a delegate to attend the Dominion conference at Dunedin in July. The social part of the meeting included a demonstration on the mak ng of boys’ trousers. Mrs. Davies, who was accorded a vote of thanks. This will be the subject of next month’s competition. The monthly competitions were as follow Flour bag article. Mrs. D. McDonald first with a dainty smocked frock; Mrs. S. Ennson second with a quaint string and duster bag; plain scones, Mrs. H. Herbert first, Mrs Eunson second. A report on the recent council meeting at Masterton was given by Miss Kent. Mesdames Wiltshire. Ennson, and Mayman were hostesses. Pirinoa. There was a good attendance at the May meeting, of the Pirinoa Women’s Institute. Two new members were proposed. Mrs. 11. Crosbie furnished a report of the annua! council meeting at Masterton. The results of' the eggless cake competition were:—Mrs. J. Busch, 1; Mrs. McKenzie, 2. The memory competition was won by Mrs. P. McDonald. The president thanked all who had assisted In making the first birthday party such a success. The profits of this party were divided equally between the institute and the Martinborough queen carnival fund. The produce stall was in charge of Mrs. D. Mclntosh. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames McLelland, Atkinson, Warren, and D, Jones. Wimblcdon-Herbertville. The Wimbledon-Herbertville Women's Institute held their monthly meeting recently at the residence of Mrs. G. Herbert. Tliere was n good attendance of members. Mrs. Herrick gave an address of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Federation meeting, which she attended. Mrs. Gollan. secretary, gave an excellent report on the same meeting, which she attended as delegate. The competition was for miniature gardens, Mrs. M. Hales coming first. Miss Longley second, and Mrs, P. Morgans third. Mrs. N. Speedy came first in the tying knots in string competition. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs. P. Morgans and Miss P. Gollan. Parewanui. A successful social and dance to celebrate the first birthday of the Parewanui Women’s Institute was held in Apa House recently, ~t which there was a large gather’ng of members, many coming from Rongotea. Sandnn and Bulls. Mrs. Crosland gave a recitation, and an amusing sketch .was given by Mrs. Martimaru. Mrs. Tattle, and ' Miss Hargraves. The various competitions were won by Mrs. Marumaru, Mrs. Huddleston, and Mrs. Anderson, ami Mr. T. Rodgers, jun. •An excellent supper was handed round, after which the president (Mrs. Tattle) thanked al] present for their attendance and called on Mrs. Drew to cut the beautiful cake, which had been made by Mrs. Harris and iced by Mrs. Marumaru. Mrs. Drew also gave greetings from Sanson institute and Wellington federation. The one candle was lit hy Mrs. Marumaru and extingu'shed by Miss 11. Russel. The music for the dance was supplied by Misses Tua, Meti Kingi. and L- Rodeers. The spot waltz was won by Mr. T. Rodgers, jun., and Miss Tua.
