Wellington’s First Paper
On April 18, I.B*lo, Wellington's first uewspaper, the “New Zealand Gazette,” | was published. This was actually the paper’s second number, the first having been published in London on September 6, 1539. The editor was Mr. Samuel Itevano, who issued the second number from a tent on Petone beach. The issue is particularly interesting, as it contains the Provisional Constitution for the settlement. When the colonists moved to Thorndon, the paper took the name of “New Zealand Gazette and Britannia Spectator,” although later the word “Wellington” was substituted for “Britannia*.” With several changes of ownership, the paper lived for at least 25 years. A copy of the historical second number is preserved at the General Assembly Library.—D.W. (Christchurch).
