BOYS’ ADVENTURE
Adrift in a Leaking Boat TIMELY ASSISTANCE GIVEN Four .small boys had an experience in a leaking boat in Evans Bay yesterday morning which, had it not been for timely assistance, might easily have resulted in serious consequences. Two oars were in the boat, but none of the boys knew how to handle them. The boys were George Duffin, aged 11, Jack Jobson, aged 9, Kay Durie, aged 8, and Maurice Miller, aged 10. The boys’ own story is that they were walking along the southern end of Evans Bay when they saw the boat lying on the beach by Ibe bathing-shed. Some other boys told them that it was theirs and said they could use it. The four lads paddled the boat, up and down the shore for a time until the wind blew them out into the bay.
Noticing that the boys appeared to be in difficulties about 11.30 a.m., Mi’ J. Sinclair, an employee at Brownlee’s mill. Kilbirnie, informed the police at Kilhirnie that they were adrift, in Evans Bay. There was a strong southerly wind blowing at the time, and the craft was drifing well out from the shore. The police communicated with Mr. C. Hclidland, who put off in a dinghy and brought the boat in before noon;' When he reached the boat it was half-full of water.
