GABRIEL’S GULLY
Seventy-fifth Anniversary Of Discovery LAWRENCE CELEBRATIONS By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, May 21. The seventy-fifth anniversary of the discovery of gold in Gabriel’s Gully was celebrated at Lawrence yesterday in fine weather. The festivities by no means reached the magnitude of the fiftieth anniversary in 1911. and were on the whole rather disappointing. In the afternoon a procession marched to the Gabriel Read Memorial in the Domain. where a wreath was laid by the Mayor, Mr. K. F. Batchelor. A large crowd then assembled in the Town Hall, where the Rev. Hugh Graham, of Mosgiel, delivered an address. Other speeches were made by representatives of various bodies and several old identi ties connected with Lawrence in the days of the gold rush. In the evening a smoke concert was held, when there was an attendance of about 250, including Mr. Francis l Moyle, aged 97. who participated in the rush, and several others of that decade The Rev Mr. Graham again gave the principal address in proposing the toast of “The Men of ’61.” The rest of the speeches consisted chiefly of reminiscences of the early days. A ball held this evening brought the celebrations to a close.
