New Wellington Station (From "The Dominion," May 21, 1911.) It is stated on the authority of Mr. \V. 11. Field, M.P., that the Minister of Railways does not intend to authorise the running of the Manawatu trains to and from Lambton station. The reason given is that the plans for the central railway station are well advanced, and that in a little time the new building will !><■ commenced. « * * Tlie Hon. D. Buddo, at Oxford, Canterbury, gaye a public meeting he was addressing some particulars of the census totals for New Zealand. He said there were some returns to come from both islands, but that they were not expected to affect the results materially. The total Dominion population to date is 974,564. and the total increase since 1906 is 114,560. [The population of New Zealand proper is now over a million and a half.]
The fund for the coronation gift to the Queen from the Marys of the Empire closes on Friday next. The presentation will take place early in June next. There will be 16,500 subscribers in Yorkshire, their subscriptions aggregating £BOO. The money subscribed in New Zealand has arrived in England.
