WALNUT TREES

For Shade, Ornament and Nuts When.* an ornamental, shady tree is needed, one would do well lo plant a walnut. Not only is the walnut attractive in its habit of growth, but the foliage is extremely handsome, also aromatic. When the tree attains a good size, it will start producing nuts and, in favourable po.-ilions, the walnut bears crops in great abundance and with regularity. Still further, there is something about the atmosphere of the walnut tree which all sorts of Hies much dislike. On a summer evening one can always sit peacefully beneath a. walnut tree without the least fear of being annoyed by winged pests which, in other parts of Ihe garden, are likely to prove a great nuisance. Walnut trees succeed in any fairly good soil, ami if this is of some depth and resting on a gravel bottom, so much the better. Generally speaking, a tree does best where it secures protection from the wind, as the young shoots anil fruits are liable to be damaged.
