GOOD FORM

The Smuggler’s Promise NOTES AND COMMENTS Brigadore to Spell (Bt The Watches.) The Smuggler has now had three wins and a third in four starts over hurdles, so he ik making excellent progress at the game. He has first-class credentials, being a good stayer on the fiat, with a Great Autumn Handicap to his credit, also a third in a New Zealand Cup. He is a good type, strong, and up to weight, while he can handle heavy going. More serious tests of course will await him in the near future, but on his form he is decidedly one of the most promising recruits of the season. He has again rendered his Great Northern weight liable to review. Brigadore Out. The promising jumper Brigadore was very lame behind after racing at Marton, an old complaint having come against him, and it has now been found necessary to spell him. With Invictus also a cot case, the Marton owner, Mr. C. Haddock, has had bad luck to lose the services of two useful candidates for the jumping season. His Turn at Last. Argentic has had a long run of placed performances this season in good races, but his turn came yesterday at Washdyke in the South Canterbury Handicap. At his best he represents good handicap form, but he has generally met one just a bit too good for him. On his last visit to Wellington he was second to both Greek Shepherd and Spiral, and he followed this up by a third in the Great Autumn. Not for Ellerslie. On the appearance of weights the ■Woodville owner-trainer C. McCullough decided against making the trip to Auckland with Flammarion. This gelding has still £lB to win before he is out of hacks, and his next outing now will probably be at Wanganui mxt month. Brilliant Juniper. Cotsfield has been giving good displays over the steeplechase fences at Hastings. A Good Marc. Polydora’s form at Ashburton last Saturday did not come up to anticipations raised by her previous run at Amberley, but she put up a good performance yesterday in beating all but Argentic. It is apparently the intention of her present owners to try for flat honours before returning her to the jumping game. Foxton Hurdler Omitted. Spender, 9.9, was omitted from the handicaps for Iho hurdle race at Foxton. Te Rapa Track. Reports from Te Ilapn state that unless rain falls before Saturday the going will lie excellent for the forthcoming Waikato meeting. ited .Manfred Resumes. Ited Manfred is now among the daily workers at Woodville, and there is just a chance that he will stand a preparation. The Manfred gelding met with a serious injury when on his trip to Melbourne last season, and on his return home was blistered and turned out. For Tc Rapa. L. Knapp has gone to Te Rapa with Forest Glow. Two members of Knapp’s string. Tail Light and Tangled, will follow a week later, the trio claiming engagements at the Great Northern meeting. Recommissioned. Clessamor has been recommissioned by R. Barlow at New Plymouth after a spell. Tiger Gain. . Tiger Gain is now in the stable of W. C. Griffith at Hastings, having been purchased by Mr. W. Henderson. For Ellerslie. Contact and Paknnui have left Hastings for Auckland. They galloped a mile together on Tuesday morning in 1.43. Out of Northern. Cynical Kid was scratched for the Great Northern Steeplechase at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. In the East. Mr. A. Yuille, keeper of the Stud Book of Australia, has returned to Sydney after a visit to Japan, China, and Singapore. Mr. Yuille said it took the conceit out Of the Australian to go to other countries and see how people there did things. It woilld be of interest to the people of zVustralia to know that the sacred horse owned by the Emperor of Japan was an Australian-bred animal. Mr. Yuille saw the Nippon Race Club’s course at Y’okoharaa, which has a very up-to-date place. Racing was very cheap in Japan, the patron being able to go to any part of the course, including the grandstand, for an outlay of 1/8. The sport is very popular among the Japanese, who were interested to know that a former champion Australian sprinter was named Fuji-san. Women's Success in England. Ou the opening day of the Liverpool Grand National meeting it was a regular •’ladies’ day,” so far aS results were concerned. Mrs. E. M. Royds won the Lancashire Hurdle Race with Pink Coat; Lady Nuttall, the Liverpool Spring Cup with Guinea Gap; Mrs. Chester Beatty, the Union Jack Stakes with Hypothesis; and Mrs. V. T. Taylor, the Lydiate Welter with Broken Hill. Other women owners successful on other days of the fixture were Lady Houston and Mesdames M. Stephens, F. A. Clark and A. Ridley. Mrs. Clark not only won the Championship Steeplechase with Kellsboro’ Jack, but gained second place in that race with Flying Minutes. The fact of eight being represented by winners at a three Hays’ meeting gives a fair idea of the extent to which women, as owners, support racing in England.
