CHAIN PHARMACIES
Parliamentary Inquiry Concluded The Parliamentary inquiry into the chain pharmacy system was concluded yesterday morning. Dr. R. Gardner, analytical and consulting chemist, Dunedin, who was the last witness, said he considered that the existing pharmaceutical manufactures covered substantially the whole range of articles that it was possible to make economically iu New Zealand at the present time. Possibilities of extension were constantly being explored; there was no lack of initiative or ability and he could not see any direction in which a development that showed any promise of success was held up for lack of capital. "I am definitely of opinion.” Dr. Gardner said, “that any new pharmaceutical factory set up in New Zealand in the near future could not. unless it was run at a loss, make any appreciable quantity of material now imported or establish a substantial new export trade' in any pharmaceutical commodities. All it could do would be to take a proportion of the work being done by existing concerns,” The chairman, Mr. IV. J. Jordan, thanked counsel for the manner in which the facts had been marshalled. He said the committee would consider its decision and, of course, report to the Government. ,
