HARD LABOUR FOR SEAMAN
Three Charges of Theft A rug stolen from a motor-car and a siutcase and some clothes taken from a boarding-house were responsible for the appearance in the Wellington Magistrate's Court yesterday of Albert Bowen, aged 54, a seaman. He pleaded guilty to the theft of a rug valued at 15/- belonging to Tse Guen Young, the theft of a pair of trousers and a suitcase, valued at £l/10/-. belonging to Victor Griffiths, and the theft of a woman’s costume and coat, valued at £3/10/-, belonging to Janet Anderson. He was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Sub-Inspector C. E. Roach said the rug was taken from complainant's motor-car while it was parked outside his house. Accused was seen walking down Taranaki Street with the rug under bis arm. The costume and coat were taken from Miss Anderson's boarding-house in College Street. When accused left the house, allegedly to go to work in the country, Miss Anderson saw him carrying a suitcase which she knew belonged to Griffiths. But because the two men shared a room she thought nothing was the matter until Griffiths came home. Accused had a long list of offences. None of the articles stolen had been recovered. Accused was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour on each of the first two charges and to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the third.
