Dr. Townsend’s Statement DISCLOSURE AT INQUIRY (Received May 20, 7.35 p.m.) Washington, May 20. It was disclosed before the investigating committee to-day that Dr. Townsend, the founder of the Townsend plan for the payment of pensions to all over the age of GO, in a letter to Robert Clements, his chief lieutenant, describing plans for expansion of the “Townsend Weekly,” the organ of the movement, had written: “You and I have the world by the tail on a downhill pull.” and that there would be a “hatful of money” for those who stood bv the pension drive. Questioned by the committee, Dr. Townsend denied that be had launched his scheme only for “cold cash” and had referred to its adherents as “old fossils.” allegations to that effect having been made by another witness.
