WIN FOR BLOMFIELD

Wrestling at Palmerston Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, May 20. Before a packed house in the Palmerston Opera House to-night “Lofty” Blomfield UNcw Zealand), 16st. 61b., beat Koepach YVoods (U.S.A.), 15st. 51b., on points, after each had secured one fall in a fast and exciting match, which went the full eight rounds. The bout opened quietly, with both men feeling the other’s strength, but the second round was brighter, Woods leading the attack. Twice he was warned by the referee for applying strangle-holds. The round ended with YVoods jolting Blomfield about. Woods opened the third' round with a series of living tackles, with which he threw Blomfield round the ring. He then clamped on a headlock and secured the opening fall with a body press at Imin. 23sec. Both worked hard in the next two rounds, first YVoods and then Blomfield indulging in a series of elbow jolts and flying tackles, but no falls resulted. In the lifth round Woods held Blomfield in a rolling splits, but the New Zealander broke away. Early in the sixth Blomfield was halfway to his feet with an Indian deathlock but YVoods managed to escape. The round ended with Blomfield holding Woods in a painful shortarm scissors. The seventh round opened full of fireworks, and after manoeuvring very carefully Blomfield secured the equalising fall with the painful octopus hold, which is similar in effect to a boston crab except that it is applied with the legs instead of the arms. Earlv in the last round YVoods worked for a 'boston crab, but Blomfield threw him off. The round was fought at a hard pace, but there were no further falls, and the referee, Mr. IV. Nicholls, awarded the bout to Blomfield. It was not a popular verdict with a good portion of the crowd. Amateur Preliminaries.
