GOING NORTH

Horses Depart Yesterday NOTES AND COMMENTS The Queen of Song Dispute (By The Watcher.) Diamond and Korcro left Trent ham for Te Rapa yesterday. From Riccarton. 11. Rama passed through Wellington yesterday en route to Te Rapa and Auckland with Horowhenua, Tooley Street and Ilorotiu. All three are good actors on soft tracks, H. W. Hibberd and JI. Kearns will do the riding. Salt spray. Saltspray is to fulfil his engagements at the Waikato meeting, and will be ridden by A. .McDonald. He has improved since Egmont. Shows Promise. Allegretto has been shaping well over steeplechase fences at Te Rapa. He is engaged on the second day of the meetIllg. Well Represented. The South Island is well represented at the Waikato meeting. They have no fewer than nine horses from Riccarton — Horowhenua, Tooley Street, Horotiu, Dollar Bill, Sea Fox, Rasouli, Koya Limoncl, Arctic Star, Jolly Beggar and Glenavon. Scratched. Brigadore has been scratched for the Te Kuiti Hurdles at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Disputed Ownership.

The hearing of the case, JI. H. C. Beale v. T. G. Hide and I’. T. Hogan, for specific performance of contract, or damages or possession of the mare Queen of Song, has been postponed until June 29 and 30. Mr. D. A. Solomon will appear for plaintiff and Jlessrs. C. S. Thomas and A. T. Donnelly for defendants.

Topped the Century. Silver Streak, who is six years old, has raced every season from and including the age of two years. He has run 103 times for 22 wins, 17 seconds, 18 thirds, and has won £1343 in stakes.

Out of Hunters’ Class. . As a result of his victory in the W. G. Park Steeplechase at Te Awamutu on Saturday, Windsor Lad has become ineligible for the hunters' races at the Auckland Racing Club's winter meeting. The conditions of the Hunt Club Hurdles and the Hunt Club Cup state that no horse will be eligible which has won a race of any description of the value of more than £lOO prior to the time of starting (hunters’ races excepted). The W. G. Park Steeplechase was worth £l2O to the winner, and as it was a hack and hunters’ steeplechase, 'Windsor Dad becomes ineligible for the Hunt Club Cup and Hunt Club Hurdles.

Arctic Star. So far as his northern tour has progressed, Arctic Star has failed to show any form worth special notice, and his third in the Orakau Hurdles at Waipa was nothing out of the way (says the “Herald”), The most impressive feature of the performance was that he was running on at the end, and' he evidently stays rather well. Arctic Star is bright and muscular, and it is on the cards .that he may soon do better.

Prospective Champion. The Auckland owner, Mr. M. H. Tims, sent Prodice to Australia, to be mated with Heroic, and she has a colt foal. The youngster has been highly spoken of, one good judge describing him as the finest foal in New Zealand, and likely .to top the market at the sale of yearlings at Trentham in January. I'rodice, a halfsister to Ammon Ra, is the dam of Gallio, one of the best juveniles of this season.

Faulty Gear. A remit which the South Canterbury Jockey Club intends to bring before the annual meeting of the Racing Conference has a lot to commend it (says the “Timaru Herald”), tl is designed to ensure that any rider whose gear gives way during a race should be obliged to report the occurrence to the stipendiary steward immediately on returning to the birdcage. If the remit becomes racing law, clubs might go further and have such reports posted on the notice board for general information.

Carterton Fields. Fair fields are engaged for the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club on Saturday. The smallest is six in the principal event, but wbat it lacks in size js compensated iu quality.

Back to fhe Saddle. H. Wiggins, whose term of suspension expires Friday week, will have the mount on Knight of Australia in the Cornwall Handicap and Tradesman in the Members’ Handicap.

Jumpers at Ellerslie. At Ellerslie on Tuesday morning Gascille (Craddock) jumped the steeplechase fences on the flat well, and afterward did two rounds of strong pace work on the sand. Black Marlin (Fergus) and King Mestor (Baker) jumped away at the mile post on the course proper to school over four hurdles. Black Marlin slipped at the first and lost his rider, King Mestor going on to complete the journey alone, his time for the mile being 1.53 1-5. Black Marlin later was sent over two hurdles along the back on the course proper, jumping without mistake. Chief Emerald (Craddock) did not have much pace on while jumping four hurdles in the centre but got through his task safely. The full-sister to Dark Prince, who has been named Electric Flash (Sharkey), and Ruling King (Williams) were sent over the fences on tile flat and two hurdles along the back. Electric Flash continued on up the hill, while Ruling King went round on rhe course proper and again rejoined Electric Flash before reaching the sod wall, the pair again taking the fences on the fiat. Electric Flash jumped well, while Ruling King also showed great improvement. ' Absent (Sharkey) started off at the brush by the mile post and continued along the back and over the hill, completing his task by negotiating the fences on the flat. He jumped well throughout. Gay Princess (Baker) was schooled over a couple of hurdles in the centre, clouting the second very hard. Zane Grey (Fergus) was also schooled over the big fences, giving a good display.

Foxton Times.

The Foxton Racing Club has decided On the following timetable for its winter meeting on May 30:—11.45; 12.30, 1.10, 1.55, 2.40, 3.20, 4.0. A Mix-up.

A similarity between the name of a horse and the name of a race caused a mix-up in connection with the engagements of H. Rama's horses for the Waikato Racing Club's meeting. The Riccarton owner-trainer telegraphed his nominations as follow“ Nominate Ilorowhenua President's, Tooley Street Stewards, Horotiu Otorohanga.” Saturday’s programme at Te Rapa includes the Horotiu Handicap, and the secretary of' the club, overlooking that Rama bad a

horse of the same name, took the telegram as entering Tooley Street for the_ Stewards. Ilorotiu, and Otorohanga Handicaps. The two last-named are hack events. Ou seeing the handicaps, Rama telegraphed again, reminding the secretary that Tooley Street is not eligible for back races, and that he wished Horotiu included in the Otorohanga Handicap. He did not receive a reply, but in due course telegraphed the acceptance of his three horses, using practically the same wording as in his first telegram when nominating them. The result was that Tooley Street again appeared in three races, while Horotiu was missed out. Rama then consulted Mr. F. T. H. Bell, the secretary of the Canterbury Jockey Club, who got into telephone communication with the secretary of the club. The situation was then cleared up.

Great Northern Acceptances. Acceptances for the Great Northern Hurdles, Great Northern Steeplechase, Cornwall Handicap, Green Lane Steeplechase, Jervois Handicap, Penrose Hurdles, Hunt Club Hurdles, and Members’ Handicap, to be run at the winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club, will close will) the secret, ary, Mr. W. S. Spence, Shortland Street, at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

A. E. Ellis for North. A. E. Ellis, who will be riding at the South Canterbury meeting to-day. will leave after the racing in order to be at Waikato on Saturday, where he will ride Wotan and One Whetn. He will remain in the north for the Great Northern meeting, where he will ride these two horses and has also been engaged for Rereatu.
