Dumping New Zealand Produce in Britain
i Sir, —Your correspondent. Air. Doidge, of Rotorua, inundates the Press of New I Zealand with some precious information. ! Mr. Doidge has discovered Air. Walter Elliot, and Mr, Elliot has uncovered the bare bones of Britain’s agricultural and pastoral policy. In a word, Mr. Doidge. per Mr. Ellior, per Lord Beaverbrook, says "ihat the Dominion producer represents a menace to the Home farmer.” Accordingly, Elliot, Beaverbrook, aud Co. are to launch a campaign of quotas, tariffs, and other devices against the Dominion farmers. What an Imperialist outlook I What a quaint objective ’ We nr e told, and we believe it because we know it to be true, that the Army, the Navy, and millions of workers throughout Great Britain do no't eat butter, but are compelled to eat margarine. We may well ask how long is Great Britain to suffer under such misguided thought? How long are the poor of the Home Country to suffer from such hopeless government? If it is open io statesmen of Britain to seal up the national isolation of the people of Great Britain in an insufficientcontainer, surely it is open to the people of New Zealand to do the best we can witli the unlimited resources we have at hand. It is Mr. Doidge’s suggestion that, during that very long period that it takes John Bull to change a muddled mind, we must behave like obedient slaves and mark time with our secondary, tertiary, and subsequent industries. It may be perfectly futile for Mr. Nash to go Home. Even he may fail to inject a little common tense into the powers that are in Great Britain. It may be a forlorn hope, but, surely, a last tilt at even the most cramped of stilted minds is worth a final effort, particularly when the cohesion and continuance of a powerful and, let us hope, a worth-while Empire is at stake.—l am, etc., . P. B. FITZHERBERT Wellington, Alay 18.
