DIGGERS’ FAREWELL

Entertainment Given Sir Herbert Hart NOTES FROM WAIRARAPA Dominion Special Service. Masterton. May 19. One hundred and fifty Diggers from ail parts of the Wairarapa were present at the Savage Club rooms at Masterton this evening to farewell Sir Herbert Hart, who is to leave this week to take up his Imperial appointment as War Graves Commissioner. The evening was spent most interestingly, ami a musical programme was in the hands of the .Savage Club Orchestra. Mr. E. Sortain Smith, who apologised for the absence of the president, Mr. .1. 11. Irving, who was in Wellington, ami Mr. IL J.' Brass, congratulated Sir Herbert Hart on his appointment to administrative rank, and remarked it was unnecessary for him to trace the career of their guest, who served in the South African War and the Great War, and who was a capable administrator of Samoa. “Me Diggers are really proud of you. Sir Herbert,” said Mr. Smith, amid applause. Sir Herbert, he said, had shown sympathy to the Diggers on anything they went, to him for, and he was known as a soldier and a gentleman. (Hear, hear.) "Me wish you and Lady Hart every success and happiness wherever you may go,” said Mr. Smith, who remarked there was one thing he would ask Sir Herbert: "That is, wherever you are, be a New Zealander, Wherever you go and whatever you do, lot it reflect in n certain way on New Zealand. The British Empire at the present time is in need of such men ns you. and we are glad you are here to serve it.” Mr. Smith expressed the hope that Sir Herbert’s service would lead to further distinguished heights. The last two races of the young bird season were flown, recently by the Masterton Racing Pigeon Club. The result, of the race from National Park was: J. Wiekens's I’har Lap, 1102yds. a minute, 1: AV. The second race was a relay, each member sending only one bird to each race point, Hunterville SO miles. Golf Course Record. Playing on the Mahiinga Golf Clubs links recently J. C. Mclntosh established a course record by doing 67 for the 18 holes. lie took 36 for the outward journey and returned in 31.
