RECKLESS MOTORISTS
Adequate Penalties Urged
Adequate penalties for motor-drivers responsible for loss of life and serious injury to others because of their careless and reckless driving were advocated by Mr. C. A. Wilkinson (Independent, Egmont) in notice of a question to the Minister of Transport, Hon. R. Semple, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Reference was made bj" Mr. Milkinson to a sentence of not more than 18 months’ reformative detention imposed upon the driver of a motor-car responsible for the death of two men. He asked the Minister whether he would see that adequate penalties were provided under the law for those who committed these serious misdemeanours affecting the lives and persons of Olliers, and if lie would make a statement reassuring Hie public. [Tlie sentence of IS months’ reformative detention referred to by Mr. At ilkinson was imposed by Mr. Justice Blair, in tlie Supreme I’ourt on Monday. Th: 1 prisoner was a ship’s fireman, who had been found guilty of a charge of negligent driving of a motor-car. thereby causing Hie deaths of two men on the Hutt Road. The prisoner was also prohibited from obtaining a driving license for 10 years.]
