Wairarapa Club’s Day at Mount Bruce DISTRICT NEWS ITEMS Dominion Special Service. Masterion. May IS. A succese-ful meeting was held by the AViiirarapa Coursing Club at Mount Bruce recently. The weather was beautifully fine, and the large attendance was treated Io an afternoon of first-class sport. The hares were in fine form and in a number of instances proved more than a match for the dogs. Results ot the events were as follow: Archer Brothers' Cup: First round—Archer Brothers’ Slippery beat P. Ryan s Our Aggie. 24-0; J. Bradbury's Blue Cobra beat D. Grimwood's Sweet Shamrock, 24(I; J. AVilkin's Interest beat Archer Brothers’ Better Days, 8-71; P. Hudsons Silver Veil beat F. Butcher's AA hy Hurry, 2-1. Second round —Slippery beat Blue Cobra, 1-0; Silver Veil beat Interest, 74-4. Final—Slippery beat Silver Veil, 2-4. Supplementary Stakes: I 1 nvt round—M.'Syron’s Mystery Yet beat AA. Spring’s AVaylay, 24-0; Archer Brothers AVild Chase beat J. AVilkin's Diabolo, 6-3. Final —Mystery Yet beat V ild Chase, 6j-3. Freezing Workers. More than 100 members heard an address by Mr. A. McLeod, district secietaiy, at a special meeting in Masterton yesterday of the Wellington District Freezing Workers’ and Related Trades Union. The subject of the address was "Unity in the Freezing Industry,” as was discussed at the recent conference in AVellington. At that conference it was decided that there would be only one registered union recognised in any one industry. Mr. McLeod was asked a . number of questions concerning the new award now being prepared. A general discussion on tlie question was heard and it was decided to hold another meeting at a later date. Good Golf Cards.

Some good cards wore handed in over the week-end bv members of the various golf clubs in 'Masterton. The second round of the net aggregate was played hy members, of the Masterton club on the Lansdowne links, the best net scores being as follow:—Senior: R. McKenzie, N. G. AA'hiteman, 69; C. Women members of the Riverside club held an L.G.U. medal competition recently. the following being the best scores:— Silver division: Airs. Rawlins, 107-16-91. Bronze division: Airs. Batty, 95-26-69; Airs. Finlayson. 100-29-81; Airs. Painmontain, 112-31-81 ; Airs. Hayne, 115-30-S5; Mrs. Carruthers, 124-36-Bs.

Building Activities. An inspection of building activities in the AVairarapa counties is at present being carried out. and it is reported that in the past week the inspector has discovered £6OOO worth of work being performed without permits.

Queen Carnival. , The latest figures in the queen, carnival ■being conducted in aid of the AA airarapn A. and I’. Society's funds arc as follow:— Carlerton-Greytown. 17,188; Martinborough, 16.505; Featherston, 14,735. It is announced that the final day of the carnival will be on Friday next, when a football match. Town v. Country, will be played at Martinborough. A procession from the football ground to the town will follow, while there will be a paddys market in the Square and a dance at night in the Town Hall. A paddy’s market and fair will also be held iu the Featherston Town Hall, and euchre will be played in the evening. Similar arrangements with the addition of a baby show will obtain at Carterton, and at Greytown a dance will be held in the Crown Theatre. Particulars are advertised in this issue.

Cycling Race. A 20-mile road race from Masterton to Carterton and back was held by the Masterton Cycling Club at the week-end. Results were as follow: —K. Burr, 1; R. Harman. 2; T. Sayers. 3. I‘astest. time was recorded by C. Osborne, 52min. u 3-ssec. Eastwood made the second fastest time, and Deegan the third fastest.

Borough Inspector’s Address. Modern science had made water a subject. of considerable interest, said Mr. 1. A. Russell, Ma.sterton Borough health inspector when addressing the nursing division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade recently. Mr. Russell gave a description of the 'different, kinds of water aud their effect on the pipes through which they flowed. Some of the pipes which were displayed contained a large amount of deposit, while others were quite clear. He described the methods of purification, and remarked that Masterton was very fortunate as the water was of a high quality. Thanks to Mr. Russell for his address were expressed by Mrs. E. Hubball, lady divisional superintendent.

Miniature Rifles. The Mastertou Miniature Rille Club will fire a post match against Martinborough this week, the Masterton teams being as follow :—No. 1 team : H. K. Smith, I.’. Russell, J. AA'hitemau, b. Summers H. Donald, D. P. Donald, T. Oakly, H. King. V. E. Donald, Mrs. King. No. - team ; G. Murdoch, H. Preston, B. Jenkins, G. Jones, H. Cross. The emergencies will be F. Gray and L. Ranall.
