DIAMOND SCHOOLS

Sale of Sky Pilot NOTES AND COMMENTS Australian-bred Sire For New Zealand (By The Watcher.) Diamond was schooled at Trentham over steeplechase country on Saturday morning, and gave a good display. He iworking quite soundly again, and mH leave for the Waikato meeting to-morrow iu company with Korero. Diamond is not certain to go on to Auckland; a lot wdl depend on how he shapes at Te Kapa. No rider has yet been engaged for Korero at Auckland, but he will be ridden at the Waikato meeting by J. Leach. Sky Phot Sold. 0’ George has sold his Stonyhurst purchase, Sky Pilot. He won races for George at Nelson and Blenheim, so he was a profitable speculation. Sky lilot.new owner resides in Canterbury, and it is understood that he does not intend to use him for racing purposes. Ihc horse was (shipped south last night. Australian Sire Imported. Air. A. F. Lawrie, of Feilding, has purchased a new sire in Australia for his stud, where Colossus has been standing for some seasone, and he is to leave Sydney for New Zealand on Friday next. This is The Greek, a young horse, rising four, by Thracian, the latter a brother to Heroic, while his dam, Myuna, is by All Black. The combination of Heroic on AH Black mares has been very successful in Australia, and at. the recent sales a colt out of Desdemona, by All Black, brought 1750 guineas. The Greeks maternal pedigree is of more than ordinary interest, as it belongs to a family already well established in New Zealand, especially at Stonyhurst. It is a No. 2 family, and Myuna is by All Black from Boiling, by Simmer from Norah, by Goldsborougn from Ladv Laura, by Hamlet from Lady Hilda, bv Lord of the Isles. From Stonyhurst Sir George Clifford bred Glenculloeb, Glenowlet, Kerrimuir, Quarryman, Adjutant and other good horses from the same tap-root, represented by the Trenton mare Madowla. In Australia it produced Blue Spec, a Melbourne Cup winner; Cranberry, an A.J.C. Derby winner afterwards sent to England; Daredevil, a winner of an A.J.C. Handicap, and Jeweller, successful in an A.J.C. Summer Handicap under 9.5.

Two for Melbourne. Mr. W. T. Hazlett is sending two rising two-year-olds to Melbourne this week to join his team over (here. Both arc by Coioncl Cygnus, Two Flash, a brown gelding out of Illume; nnd Red Mill, a brown filly out of Moulin Rouge.

Improving. The Marton maiden winner Garter Red is a. half-brother to Lack, a Lackham colt who showed form as a two-year-old. Garter Red’s form rO fur is nothing out of the ordinary, but he is improving.

Worth Watching. A likely sort of maiden to improve was produced' for his fiivt race at Marton on Saturday. This was Mr. A. T. Gatrell’s two-year-old gelding I’cople's Idol, who is bv Laughing Prince from Acorn, the dam'of Ethiop. People's Idol showed puce out in front to the turn, and with experience looks like being an early winner.

Well Below Iler Best. Mother Superior, at one stage of her career, would have made short work of the opposition she encountered at Marton over seven furlongs on Saturday, but she raced with a conspicuous absence of dash, ami gave no indication whatever of her former pace. Mr. Grace states that, always a lazy worker on the trucks, she is now more indolent than ever, and if she does not show any improvement shortly she will be retired to the stud.

Has Improved. Gay Boy is one of the most improved handicap horses at this end of the island, and his win at Marton, besid s being a very meritorious effort, was suggestive that he is still a long way from the end of his improvement. Kan a Good Race.

Ethiop, who races well fresh, and usually goes off after a few starts, acted up to this opinion of him by running an excellent race on Saturday. He may not be long before he wins a race.

On Way Home. The Randwick trainer G. Price was at the Marton races on Saturday, cn route to Auckland, whence he will depart fur Sydney again this week.

Jumped Badly. Manawatu is looking well, but be jumped much below bis best form at Marton. He ie now owned by Mr. Frank Armstrong and is in Mrs. McDonald's stable. A Game Rider. The Hawera trainer-jockey W. Grindlay was responsible for a game piece of riding in the steeplechase at Marton. He lost an iron on lllawarra early in the race, but despite this handicap not only kept his mount going but right up in front with the leaders until finally the saddle began to come apart, when he fell out of the contest. Showed Promise. Battleground made a good showing in the steepleebase at Marton, and was a possibility until the last couple of fences. If he improves at all he may win a race of this description before long. From a Good Mare. Another likely sort in the same race was Tangled, a five-year-old gelding by a Wilderness colt named Dead Sea out of that once good mare Dainty Step. Tangled looks good, and has apparently done a fair amount in private. He was well in the picture till the tinal stages of the race. Inconsistent. Reipar ran one oi his good races m the Crofton Hack Cup. This Greyspear gelding is a puzzle. On his day he gallops well, but the mood is often lacking. Not. So Good. Joviality carried half a stone overweight in the concluding event at Marton, but this is insufficient excuse for his failure. The Smuggler. Southern writers are keen on the prospects of The Smuggler as a hurdler, and his form at Invercargill on Saturday, when he was such a hot favourite that his backers lost money on the place machine, suggests that he will make good. The Smuggler has some very good handicap form on the flat, much better than the average jumper, including a good third in a New Zealand Cup. He also has plenty of size to carry weight. Another Iron -Horse. Few horses have had a more strenuous time than Silver Streak, and the way he keeps on winning is a tribute to his remarkable constitution. The time for the 10 furlongs on Saturday was very fast, and encouraging for further events over a bit of ground, but it is not in his favour for the near future that he does not like soft going. For Australia. The Paladin horse Unbbi, purchased by Mr. Goodfellow, of Melbourne, at the Corry dispersal sale, was shipped to his

new home last week. On Parade is to leave Auckland by the Wauganella next Friday for Sydney, and join the stable of F. McGrath. First for Present Owner.

Taillight scored his first win for Mr. K. McK. Duncan when lie won at Marton on Saturday, but he bad shown promise at Manawatu and Pahiatua. He will probably now go on to Auckland and contest the Carbine Plate, run under the same conditions as the Marton event.

All Well. Forest Glow raced only on the first day at Egmont, but his owner states that there is nothing wrong with him, and he is a definite candidate for Great Northern honours.

Our New King's Cup. A good deal of interest was taken in Australia in the contest for the King’s Cup at Adelaide on Saturday, as it was the first time it had been competed for under the gift of King Edward. It also coincided with Adelaide’s centenary. The race was inaugurated in 1927 by the late King George, as an annual event, and it has been competed for without intermission ever since, on the system that each State of the Commonwealth stages it in alternate years, the first being held at Flemington. Maurice McCarten has two King's Cups to bis credit, having won on Limerick and Kuvcra. In addition to Limerick, New Zealand-bred horses to win were I’har Lap and Second Wind.

New Entrance. A new entrance is to be made at the north end of the training sheds at Riccartou. The present gate will be closed, as its position makes it too easy an exit to the road for horses that get away from their attendants.

Gelded. Sir Charles Clifford’s Impersonator was gelded last week. He will have a spell before starting on a preparation for three-year-old racing.

Carterton Acceptances. Acceptances for the Carterton Racing Club’s annual meeting on Saturday, May 23. close with the secretary, Mr. J. B. Bairstow, nt S o'clock to-night.

At Riccarton to-day Gigglcswick and Courtyard were companions over four hurdles. The fymer again gave a good display, but Courtyard did not shape as well as in some of his previous essays. Monastic was responsible for a pleasing effort over 10 of the schooling steeplechase fences. He is to be taken to Mashdyke to-morrow in order tn he schooled OVCr the foncpfi there on Wetlnrsdny. Argentle and Haere Tomi will accompany him. , J. S. Shaw has gone north with Sen Fox and Dollar Bill, nnd hoth will ho on hand for the Waikato meeting opening on Saturday, going on to Ellerslie next week. A. Mcsservy will do the riding, and he will leave on Thursday night. H. Rama will leave for the north tomorrow with Horowhenua, Tooley’ Street, anil Horotiu. and they also will race at Waikato before going to Ellerslie. Punchestown has been on the easy list for a few days following an injury to one of his legs when schooling last week, but he is expected to be able to school again before the end of the week. Chief Ranger, owned by Mr. A. Young, of Christchurch, will in future be trained by L. G. Morris at Marton, and he has been sent to his new quarters by M. B. Edwards, who has been looking after the gelding since he raced at Riccarton at Easter. Present intentions are to take Silver Streak to Australia for the spring racing. and he is to accompany Silver Ring, leaving some time in August. A. E. Ellis, who will again go over with Silver Ring, will be engaged also for Silver Streak on the trip.
