BRIGHT FUTURE—IF ALL CO-OPERATE

Acclimatisation Society Looks Ahead A bright future —“provided we can abstain from internal dissensions, and present a united front toward the furtherance of that object for which we are all banded—the conservation of wild life together with the provision of reasonable sport at a reasonable price for as many as possible of our people”—ls predicted in the report of the 'Wellington Acclimatisation Society, to be presented to the annual meeting on May 25. “These alms we confidently believe can best be achieved under such a system as ours which calls forth so much voluntary work from those who are prepared lo give freely of their best just for their love of wild life, and that it would be not only a retrograde step, but a most expensive one to sportsmen, to allow that control to be usurped entirely by salaried officers. "Certain reforms in our organisation are indeed necessary, but these can easily be attained in a constitutional manner. The sporadic outbursts of disunity and destructive, criticism which appear from time to time among our members are seldom worthy of sportsmen, and are always fuel to the fires of those who would destroy us. Let the contented but. inactive members come forward more freely with practical interest and co-operation; let the discontented not rashly discard the comparative comfort of a frying pan for the destructive discomfort of the surrounding fire.” The report states that the council has investigated the society’s expenditure during the year and has reached the conclusion that a reduction cannot be achieved without lowering efficiency; in fact, existing facilities cannot be maintained, much less increased, without increased revenue.
