BUSY HOSPITAL MONTH
Jottings From Dannevirke Dannevirke, May 10. The following members were present at the monthly meeting of the Dannevirke Hospital Board: Messrs. L. Stein (chairman), 11. E. Bunny, E. Harding, A. 11. Hansen, C. A. Sutton, It. H. Morgan and P. C. Smith. Leave of absence was granted Messrs. L. G. Crosse, J. Millar and H. Fredrickson. The medical superintendent, .Dr W. Beedie, reported that the hospital was very busy, 52 patients having been admitted since the first of the month. At present there were in hospital 78. patients— 25 women, 27 men, and 25 children, and one case of scarlet fever in isolation. During the month 44 surgical operations were performed, 30 cases for X-ray examination and 208 massage treatments. The matron, Miss M. E. Brown, reported that during the month the hospital had been exceptionally full and busy, all the wards being overcrowded. It was necessary to engage a relieving nurse for a few days. Gifts had been received from Mr. Renwick (butter and cream), Mrs. Spackman and Mr. A. Baker (books and magazines), Mr. Tuthell, Wairarapa (game), Mr. Hutchinson (cakes). The Municipal Band visited the hospital during the month. The reports were adopted. School Nurse. An announcement was made yesterday by Dr. A. G. Paterson, director of the division of school hygiene in the Dominion, to the Hawke's Bay Education Board that consideration was being given to the appointment of a school nurse for the Dannevirke district, to take special care of the Maoris. School Appointments. The appointment of 31 new teachers to schools in various parts of the Hawke’s Bay province was approved by the Hawke’s Bay Education Board yesterday. They included the following: Mr. J. Browning, headmaster, Dannevirke North; Mr. J. 11. Brentow Rule, Dannevirke South; Miss J. Higgins, Ormondville; Miss M. E. Callaghan, Otawhao Road; Miss D. M. Orr, Waitahora. Resignations were accepted from the following : Mr. James Simpson, Dannevirke South; Miss M. Y. Catherwood, Matamati ; Miss E. D. Tily, PapataWa. BIDI BIDI PEST Parasites to be Liberated Soon Wanganui, May 17. Further advice has been received in Wanganui concerning the liberatiou of piri piri insects in the Wanganui district to combat the bidi bidi post. Writing to the secretary of the committee of farmers who subscribed to send him to Chili to secure quantities of the insect, Dr. David Miller, of the Cawthron Institute, reports that the adult insects are commencing to emerge. “Judging from past experience they should make their appearance in sufficiently large numbers during this month.” says Dr. Miller, “so that I shall have •nough to bring with me and make the first liberations. . . We were concerned a few weeks ago with a fungus disease rhich started to attack the developing insects, but we have been successful in getting this under control before a great deal of damage had been done.” Replying to a query from the V anganui branch of the Farmers’ Union, Dr. Miller said he had communicated with England asking for all possible information ou variegated thistle. To treat the fungus appearing on the insects mentioned by Dr. Miller, a later letter has been received iu which it was stated that it was necessary for each insect to be treated in a specially prepared bath, which was a very delicate and tedious operation. Flying an Auckland Aero Club’s aeroplane stationed nt Hamilton, Mr. W. T. Morton, Te Kuiti. arrived at the Wanganui airport on Saturday afternoon at ■1.15 o’clock, via Now Plymouth. He left, on Sunday morning al 10 o'clock for 1 lamllton.
Mr. D. Brewer, a grocer, of 25 Torrens Terrace, injured his left ankle while playing football yesterday, lie was taken to hospital by the Free Ambulance.
